After your private group arrives at Muir Woods, you’ll spend 90 minutes of free time exploring the national monument set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt and which hosts a monument honoring President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Is Muir Woods a national park?

Not on its own. Muir Woods was established in 1908 as a national monument, not a national park. Today, the park is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. a patchwork of lands in the San Francisco Bay Area that IS a national park.

What is there to do in Muir Woods?

Most visitors go to Muir Woods to see the Coast Redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. On its six miles of boardwalks and trails through old-growth California redwoods, visitors can also find over 300 species of plants and animals, even endangered ones like the northern spotted owl.

How far is the Muir Woods redwood forest from San Francisco?

Very close. Just 16 miles (25 km) from Union Square in San Francisco to Muir Woods National Monument. Plan on a 30-to-60-minute drive through city traffic. Public transportation on the Muir Woods Shuttle is available from Sausalito which can be reached on a Blue and Gold waterfront ferry.

How long is the tour?

This tour takes 4-5 hours. Allow a little extra time in the Summer and on holiday weekends.

Is admission included?

The Muir Woods National Monument entrance fee is included in your tour cost.

Yes, we cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get to Muir Woods.

Is the Muir Woods private tour guided?

Yes, the tour is guided with an English-speaking guide. The time that you spend in Muir Woods will be on your own without guided commentary. Park rangers are available for questions.

What should I bring?

Extra spending money for meals, snacks, souvenirs etc.

How will we recognize the vehicle?

As we have several different vehicles, all are clearly marked “Extranomical Tours”. Your guide will have your name and announce the arrival of the vehicle at your pick-up location.

Are meals included? Can I buy or bring my own?

Meals are not included. There is a small café at the visitors center but we recommend having a meal before you arrive so you don’t waste precious time standing in line to order food.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Please notify us at time of booking if you are bringing a wheelchair on the tour so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Please note that we are unable to guarantee an ADA vehicle.
